Statement by Governor Vilsack
DES MOINES – Governor Vilsack today released the following statement regarding the fifth anniversary of September 11th. The Governor also signed the attached proclamation declaring September, 2006, as “Preparedness Month in Iowa.”
“On the fifth anniversary of September 11th 2001, we honor the memory of the nearly 3000 Americans who lost their lives that day, especially those Iowans whose lives were tragically cut short in the attack - Craig Amundson, Jim Cleere, Tim Haviland, Karen Kincaid, Mari-Rae Sopper, Sandra Teague, and Michael Tinley. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with their families and with every person who lost loved ones on this day.
Today, we also honor those Iowans risking life and limb for us in the armed forces, as well as the everyday heroes that make our communities stronger and our nation safer. These everyday heroes are the firefighters, emergency responders, and paramedics who save lives; the peace officers who keep our neighborhoods safe; the nurses and doctors who care for the sick and injured, and all others who make life better for others, each and every day.
Americans will always remember with sadness what was lost on this day, but it is my hope we will never forget what was gained – a sense of commitment to each other, to this country and to the principles it stands for. We became one nation, a unified community working together to help each other through our darkest moments and it is that memory which should forever be ingrained in our hearts and minds.”
