More than 2 million Iowans are registered to vote in the Nov. 7 election, the Iowa Secretary of State's office announced today.
The deadline to register was Saturday. A report released today showed 2,077,239 Iowans registered for the midterm election, just seven days away.
They included 624,000 Republicans, 646,000 Democrats and 808,000 registered as no party.
This year's number of registered voters compares with 1,966,459 who registered to vote in November 2002, the last midterm election.
Voter interest and turnout is usually higher in years there is a presidential election. In 2004, registration was 2.1 million.
Voter registration in Iowa is done through local county auditors' offices. Iowa this year implemented a statewide database of voters under the federal Help America Vote Act. The database has allowed election officials to eliminate duplicate records and keep a more accurate record of Iowa voters, according to the secretary of state's office.
