New lawmakers get acquainted with Statehouse

DES MOINES --- Monday was like the first day of school for newly elected members of the Iowa General Assembly, as 20 new lawmakers rushed to acquaint themselves with the people and traditions of the Statehouse.
Sen. Jeff Danielson, D-Waterloo, a firefighter, laughed at the parallels between his experience Monday and the first day of school.
"The best way to see they're exactly alike is the picking of seats. When you come for your first day of school, you don't know where you'll sit, literally," he said.
Rep. Bob Kressig, D-Cedar Falls, a retired John Deere employee, said he's looking forward to his work on the House Economic Growth Committee.
"It's going to be an education process for sure," he said.
Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson, R-Dows, sympathizes with the newcomers.
"We all went through it as a new member," he said. "It took us the first week to find out where to hang up our coats, where the bathroom is, and where to do things."
