Polling conducted in House District 19
6/16/2006 Negative polling conducted in House District 19
My campaign for re-election is progressing smoothly. However, I wanted to touch base with you regarding a poll that was conducted in my district recently. You may have received a phone call or heard about it so I wanted to set the record straight.
The callers suggested that this was an independent poll and would take about 8 minutes. The survey covered some legitimate campaign polling topics and then became very one sided as it included statements that purported to be my vote or position on issues. These were followed by repeated requests: “Would that make you more likely to vote for Kressig; less likely to vote for Kressig or no difference in your vote?” The problem is the information that was provided is either distorted or not accurate. Here are the approximate statements from the “poll” and in italics, my position or vote on that issue.
1. “Bob Kressig voted against the resolution defining marriage between one man and one woman.”
I support the current Iowa law that says marriage is between a man and a woman.
2. “After there was a scandal involving a state agency in which millions of tax dollars were misspent, Bob Kressig voted to give the agency even more money and lessen the controls on the way the money can be spent.”
I voted for greater accountability in state contracts. From now on, there will be more financial reporting, more open records, and better protection for whistleblowers that expose illegal activities. I also voted to provide needed funds to keep open 24 workforce development offices where Iowans get help with job placement. These offices were about to close due to reduced federal funding.
3. “Bob Kressig sided with the big insurance companies against small companies wanting to ban together to get insurance.”
I sponsored legislation to allow small businesses to join together to form insurance pools to cut their health insurance costs and make it more affordable to provide medical coverage to their employees. I opposed a plan that allowed special interest groups to drive up health insurance costs on small businesses. The Republican leaders refused to allow the original bill that I sponsored be debated or voted on.
4. “Bob Kressig accepted thousands of dollars from organizations that support amnesty for illegal aliens.”
I voted to impose penalties on business executives who knowingly hire illegal aliens, to allow inspection of company records for immigration violations and to protect employees who report the hiring of illegal aliens to authorities. I also voted to curb the exploitation of illegal aliens by forbidding a person (including a corporation) from recruiting or transporting another human for forced labor or sexual slavery. Finally, I supported legislation requiring a business that receives state economic development assistance to fill new and retained jobs by hiring American citizens or legal resident aliens with work permits.
In view of my stated position or vote, I’ll let you decide the accuracy of the statements from the “poll.”
I will continue to run a positive, independent and issues-based campaign focusing on the needs of the people here in Cedar Falls and not powerbrokers or leaders in Des Moines. If you wish to discuss any of these issues or you hear other information that portrays my voting record or position on issues, please contact me (see below) or visit my web site www.BobKressig.com. I appreciate the opportunity to serve you and I thank you for your support.
